Ground conditioning
Transform in-situ ground before and during construction to deliver the physical and mechanical performance required by the project.
The objective is not to achieve the highest possible strength. It is to engineer the ground so it behaves as the project requires at the location and time the performance is needed.
Engineer the required behaviour
Depending on the intended outcome, treatment can address:
- Permeability and groundwater control
- Strength and load-bearing capacity
- Stiffness and deformation control, including Young’s modulus
- Cohesion and stability
- Controlled excavatability
- Temporary construction performance or long-term durability
Project-specific targets
Requirements vary by project, depth, location and treatment zone.
- Below 1 MPa may suit stable, controlled excavatability
- 2–5 MPa may suit certain stabilization or load-bearing requirements
- Other strength targets can be engineered where required
- Permeability targets respond to water pressure and the required level of control
- Young’s modulus or other deformation criteria apply where stiffness is critical
Durability by design
Treatment may be designed for a temporary construction requirement or for long-term performance potentially exceeding 100 years, subject to materials, exposure conditions, testing and the project design.
